Poor little 106 GTI in the junkyard I visited today. Someone had took the oil cap off so the engine was rusting internally.

I just checked their website and it looks like it ended up there because of a breakdown since it wasn’t crashed. IT COULD HAVE BEEN SAVED. http://www.ne-motorsalvage.co.uk/pages/page_34.…

“Someone had took the oil cap off so the engine was rusting internally.”

What a senseless waste of life.

Maybe engine failure was what took it there. No crash damage (bumper was removed to sell) and it had over 150k miles on it.

That’d make sense, I suppose. I wouldn’t generally expect a 106 GTi to last much longer than that, driven as most of them were. Still, it’s a real shame to see another off the road; they’re getting really rare these days, and examples that haven’t been boy racer-ed to fuck are even harder to find. They’re going to be crazy expensive by the time I can actually get sane insurance on one.

Kinja'd!!!

May you frolic on the great rally stage in the sky, little GTi.

The shell is still good assuming there’s no rot underneath. Someone should engine swap it and rally it or something.

There were quite a few 106s and Saxos there unfortunately. Many with fart cans and halfords seat covers.

It’d probably make a good parts-car for any rally team that already rallies a 106. I think scrapheaps are where a lot of them get their spare bodywork and such these days.

The 106 and Saxo were, by their very nature, always doomed to be treated as largely disposable cars, sadly.

Yeah true, there were an absolutely vast amount of 206s there too which didn’t surprise me. Some of them weren’t even that old.

If my bad luck with the Twingo continues I’ll be back there for parts soon enough...

I shan’t be weeping for those.

Is this anything to do with that scrape you got in a few days ago?

I knocked my mirror off today as well as the scrape on consecutive days. Mirror is almost repaired though (new glass is in the post).

Need to go to the body shop tomorrow and get a quote for a bumper respray.

if it were southeast, I might have saved it and put less tragic wheels on it like these.....

Kinja'd!!!

instead I bought a mk5 Golf GTI.

TIL the 206 is one of the best selling cars ever. over 7.2 million total between 1998 and 2012 versus 5.5 million for the mini from 1959 to 2001.

To be fair they only sold them here to about 06-07 and I imagine the Fiesta and Corsa were about as popular. It was the only common car that was there more for breakdowns than crashes.

I imagine the GTI is a better choice than a broken 15 year old car with 150k miles likes...

Ever since a rather unfortunate encounter with the post that holds up my front garden’s gate, the cover on the back of my passenger-side mirror has been attempting to escape from my car. It still hasn’t managed it yet, but I do have to give it a good shove every month or so.

It still fits fine, so I think all I need to do to sort the problem permanently is get some adhesive on there... Of course, I likely won’t bother until the cover actually falls off and ends up lost in a random car park somewhere.

Iran, Egypt and south america were the locales where it ran to 2012. but yes the Festa is the best selling uk nameplate of all time. though in terms of the biggest selling single model in the UK I dunno it probably is the Mini.

I got some Loctite glue to put mine back together since some clips snapped. I had the other mirror replaced by the dealer I bought it from because someone had screwed it back together.

The dickheads who drive up insurance probably went for Astra VXRs instead.

and Fiesta/Focus ST. I haven’t posted about the Golf here because I’m harbouring a dirty secret about it.

There were only BMW Minis there. Most original ones have either found themselves with enthusiasts or returned to the Earth by now.

Last time I went to my local pick your own, there were to shells with barely anything left in them (in terms of classic mini)

I’ll whisper it, it has a DSG,I bought an auto. it has it’s merits it economy and speed but it’s no manual. it has the plaid seats though!

Meh if that’s what you prefer no need to have to explain it to anyone. I drive a tiny car with too many speakers and 3 white wheels haha.

it was a chance to try something new, I knew that no vw manual gearbox was gonna feel as good as the mx5 (trust me the MX5 box is just amazeballs) and I saw one with massive spec and test drove a few and went with it. I’ve only hit the brake with the left foot twice since owning it (not a lot of autotragic experience).

I love little cars, you can thrash them to death without getting in trouble, I’m sure I’ve told you before but the most fun car I’ve ever owned was a 1.4 Polo with 100hp.

The only auto I’ve driven that I liked was an Audi R8 haha, but I haven’t really driven many. Haven’t actually driven one at all on public roads.

This is true. If I drove a GTI like I drive the Twingo I’d have lost my licence, yet I barely ever speed.

before I got it I was like £500 remap is needed 200hp is not enough 240 is what I need, but nah it’s enough. overtaking is effortless now. The setup is similar to the R8 just FWD lightning quick shifts and also has launch control. it’s really nice in traffic and on long journeys.

I tried to overtake some old lady doing 45mph in a 60 earlier. Saw there was nothing for quite a way down the road kicked down and went to pull out... I had to pull back in. I forgot I was driving a Twingo for a moment there.
